MetraWeather’s expansion in ASEAN is supporting newsbrands in Hong Kong, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Australia to produce highly-accurate weather and environmental content including information on earthquakes, volcanic activity, tsunamis, and air quality.
MetraWeather has successfully onboarded new customer GMA Network in the Philippines and commenced a new contract with long-standing customer, TV5, in the Philippines.
GMA Network is one of the largest broadcast companies in the Philippines with interests in a wide array of media-related businesses.
TV5 is a major Filipino commercial television network based in Mandaluyong City, Philippines. It is owned by MediaQuest Holdings, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company.
The climate of the Philippines consists of long periods of benign weather as well as occasional extreme conditions that briefly, but severely impact, life and property.
The driver behind these Philippines broadcasters’ enhanced weather communications is MetraWeather’s Weatherscape XT Black Edition weather graphics platform.
Weatherscape XT enables the curation and publishing of forecasts, weather news and alerts over multiple channels including broadcast TV, the internet, mobile devices and social media.
Both broadcasters are receiving high-resolution imagery and data from the Himawari 8 geostationery weather satellite, operated by the Japan Meteorological Agency.
They will also take new high-resolution (finely detailed and highly-granular) WRF data that will enable forecasting at hyperlocal suburban, and metropolitan and provincial levels.
The channels have been supported by MetraWeather’s broadcast engineering and customer support hub in Bangkok where MetraWeather’s new ASEAN regional office is located.
In addition to their support to GMA Network and TV5, the hub also assisted Vietnam’s largest broadcaster, VTV, to onboard Weatherscape XT Black Edition; supported an upgrade for CNN Philippines; and provided weather graphics solutions for two broadcasters in Myanmar.
