Futsal player struck by lightning dies

Sabah futsal player, Faizal Alli, who was struck by lightning during a match in conjunction with ‘Liga Sukan Untuk Semua’ (LiSUS) last Saturday, has died.

KUALA LUMPUR: Sabah futsal player, Faizal Alli, who was struck by lightning during a match in conjunction with ‘Liga Sukan Untuk Semua’ (LiSUS) last Saturday, has died.

The Youth and Sports Ministry in a statement today said the 41-year-old victim passed away at 11.02am at the University Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre, where he was admitted since the Oct 13 incident.

The ministry said it would assist Faizal’s family in making arrangements to have his body flown back to Tawau for funeral.

Faizal, his teammate, Abdul Wahid Habib Abdullah and their opponent, Nurr Izati Kamsani, were struck by lightning during a futsal match between Sabah and Terengganu held at the Bukit Jalil National Sports Complex at 4.30pm.

Both Faizal and Wahid were representing Sabah while Nurr Izati was with the Terengganu Team.

It was learnt that during the incident, Faizal suddenly fell down and became unconscious after being struck by lightning while his teammate fell while running to the side line.

Nurr Izati fell unconscious while going towards the Terengganu team’s camp.

It was understood that the match official did not stop the game despite heavy rain at the time.
